NMTCB Definitions of Certification Status

ACTIVE
This certification is ACTIVE and in Good Standing with all requirements for certification having been met for the current certification period as defined by the certification 'Expiration' date.
INACTIVE
This certification is not in good standing. The certificant did not complete his or her renewal by the certification 'Expiration' date. The certificant may be eligible to regain 'ACTIVE' status if he or she completes all of the requirements defined in the CE Policy within five calendar years from the 'Expiration' date.
CE PROBATION
A certificant who has failed to adhere to the NMTCB CE Policy is placed on CE PROBATION for up to six (6) months or until the terms of the probation are met, which ever comes first.
PROBATION
The certificant maintains certification, but specific requirements must be met within a given time frame in order to return to ACTIVE status. If the probation requirements are not met, the certificant may be subject to further administrative discipline.
SUSPENDED
The certificant has his/her certification removed. There is a possibility of the certification being reinstated after specific requirements have been met.
INCOMPLETE
Renewal of this certification was attempted prior to the 'Expiration' date but some element of the renewal process was not complete. This may include a missing signature on the renewal or check for fee payment, missing answers to the ethics or CE questions, or missing explanation for a 'Yes' answer to one or more ethics questions. Certificants are typically given 30 days to complete their renewal after which their status will revert to INACTIVE if not completed.
RETIRED
This is an INACTIVE certification status given to person who claim to have retired from the field. The certificant may be eligible to regain 'ACTIVE' status if he or she completes all of the requirements defined in the CE Policy within five calendar years from the 'Expiration' date.
EMERITUS
This is an INACTIVE certification status given to person who claims to have retired from the field and will not practice in a clinical setting. To qualify for Emeritus status, a certificant must have maintained either 15 years active certification, or 10 years active certification and be over the age of 62.
POLICY
This status represents one of two conditions:
  1. A certificant who has been INACTIVE for five years or more has had his or her certification removed and may only become certified by meeting all of the current eligibility requirements and taking and passing the NMTCB examination.
  2. An applicant who has exhausted all of his or her examination opportunities under the initial examination application and may only become certified by meeting all of the current eligibility requirements and taking and passing the NMTCB examination.
REVOKED
An individual who has had his or her certification removed for failure to adhere to NMTCB policies.
BANNED
